There are various myths and legends about the origin of this statue. Moai are giant human figures carved from volcanic rock. The creation of moai was even attributed to ancient giants and aliens :)

But in 1955 it turned out that the secret of creating moai statues was passed down from generation to generation in the Aboriginal tribe, and the Europeans were not told this secret, simply because they did not ask.

There is a version that giants contribute to good weather and prosperity, since the spirits of ancestors live in them.
