Pilot Helmet, Papercraft Mask Template

NEED A FANCY DRESS COSTUME? Make your own from recycled card with these easy to follow instructions.

Part of our Hero Armour range I have designed this set of templates and instructions so that you can make your own Sci-Fi inspired Helmet. The helmet is scaled to fit an adult with a head circumference of 60cm but you can make smaller helmets by scaling down the templates when you print, check our FAQ section for details. The templates also come with instructions for an internal head band that can be adjusted by moving the fixing points to get a snug fit. Please keep in mind that the finished helmet is something that you have made yourself, from card and will not protect your head if you decided to do something stupid whilst wearing it.

The construction principles are the same as our other masks but with this helmet it helps to have a little spacial awareness for the final assembly process. If you can identify and match shapes you will do fine.

The templates and instructions are supplied as a 18 page PDF that is available to download as soon as you complete your purchase, so there is no more waiting for the postman. Simply download your PDF and print the templates on normal printer or copier paper. I’ve set out the templates so that they are FULLY COMPATIBLE WITH BOTH A4 AND US LETTER PAPER. With all of our templates you have the option to build the mask with or without gluing tabs. Without tabs is quicker but with building tabs is neater. The tabbed version of this mask takes approximately 3-5 hours to build.

We believe in minimising our environmental impact so I designed the masks to be made from either reclaimed or locally sourced card. Old packaging boxes work really well, we use a lot of empty cereal boxes but you can also use 300gsm card purchased from a local craft store. Having printed the templates on paper, stick them to card, cut them out, match the numbers and join the parts together.

We supply our templates plain so that you can make your creation unique by decorating and colouring your mask in any way that you like. Try coloured card, paints and marker pens or gluing on patterned paper or fabric. What makes our masks unique? You may have noticed that our masks have a very low number of facets or surfaces, in technical terms this is a low poly count. It is this low poly count and some ingenious engineering that make our masks quick, easy and most importantly really good fun to build. Making things should be fun so with each mask I devote a lot of time to removing the fiddly, complicated, annoying and frustrating parts so that when you come to build your mask the process is relaxing and kind of therapeutic.
